Edward Newman Library and Legacy Program

Beloved Temple Professor Edward Newman championed Jewish causes and advocated for those with disabilities throughout the entirety of his life. Before his passing, Dr. Newman raised significant gifts for Temple Hillel. To inspire similar giving, Temple Hillel launched a matching gift campaign. Commitments were made by Newman family members and friends, members of the Philadelphia Jewish community, Temple University trustees and Temple Hillel board members.

As a part of the gift made in Professor Newman’s memory, a legacy program was designed to capture his spirit. The Newman Legacy Program includes:

  • A library named for Professor Newman, to communicate his deep rootedness in Jewish tradition.

  • A “book of the year” initiative, symbolic of his desire to pass along the Jewish tradition to younger generations.

  • Two annual lectures to encompass the universalist value he embodied.
